Born on 31 July 1813 at Bishop Auckland, County Durham, England, the son of a tanner and manufacturer. Educated at the Bishop Auckland Grammar School. Entered the ministry in 1836 and was appointed to the Alnwick circuit. He married on 14 October 1837 at Hexham Abbey, Northumberland, England, to Elizabeth Dinning. They arrived in New South Wales in 1838. Appointed to Windsor, N.S.W. Arrived at Melbourne on 9 March 1841 per "Australasian Packet" from Sydney, N.S.W. First resident Wesleyan minister at Melbourne. Opened the Wesleyan Chapel, Collins Street, Melbourne, on 24 June 1841. Returned to Sydney in September 1842 per "Westbrook". At Bathurst, N.S.W. Also ministered at Sydney; Illawarra; Maitland; Brisbane; Camden; Singleton: Morpeth; and Parramatta. Elected President of the New South Wales and Queensland Conference in 1875. Retired as a supernumary in 1877. Appointed chaplain to the Naval and Military forces and the Hospitals in 1885. His wife died in 1886. Died on 27 December 1899 at 'Regent House,' Regent Street, Petersham, Sydney, New South Wales, and was buried on 28 December 1899 at the Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney, N.S.W.
