MAJOR ST. LAWRENCE WEBB

(c1783-1868) ( Baptist? )

Born c1783 at Donaghadee, County Down, Ireland, the son of George Webb, gentleman, and his wife Caroline, nee Boyd. Ensign in 69th Regiment from 7 April 1808. Lieutenant from 22 November 1809. He married c1815 at Bellary, Madras Presidency, India to Elizabeth Colloden/Culloden. Captain in H.M. 45th Regiment of Foot from 26 May 1825. Major from 22 April 1835. Arrived at Melbourne on 10 July 1840 per "Coromandel" from London, England, with his children. Assisted Peter Virtue and James Wilson with early Baptist services held in a tent at Melbourne. Was a farmer on the Darebin Creek from c1841 till after 1847. Conducted services in a private Presbyterian chapel on Malcolm McLean's 'Strathallen' estate, near Darebin, in the absence of an ordained minister. According to the 1856 Electoral Roll he was living at Hermsley, Moolap, Geelong. He was later joint proprietor of the Bellerine Mill. He died on 27 May 1868 at Railway Place, Sandridge, Victoria and was buried on the 30 May 1868 at the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton, Vic.
