Born on 24 March 1795 at Derby, England. Lay preacher. Educated at Rotherham College, Yorkshire. Ordained pastor of the Independent Church, Wrexham, Denbighshire, North Wales, in May 1828. Arrived at Hobart on 25 April 1838 per "Aberdeenshire" as a missionary for the Colonial Missionary Society. Arrived at Melbourne on 21 May 1838 per "Adelaide" from Hobart, V.D.L. Held services in various temporary premises in Melbourne prior to the opening of the Independent Church, corner of Collins and Russell Streets, Melbourne in 1841. Kept a diary which was subsequently published. He was married on 15 June 1842 at Melbourne, Port Phillip District, by the Rev. James Forbes, to Mary Purves, daughter of Liddell Purves of Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland, England, and his wife Mary, nee Scott. Was a non-resident partner with his brother-in-law, Richard Hale Budd (who married Elizabeth Purves), in a station near Lancefield from 1844 to 1856. Went to Van Diemen's Land in July 1843 per "Tamar". At the Forth, Don, and Leven Rivers (1843-48). At Green Ponds, V.D.L. from 1848. Retired in 1866. Died on 17 May 1868 at the Mission House, Green Ponds, Tasmania, and was buried on 25 May 1868 at Kempton Congregational Church, Green Ponds, Tasmania.
