Rev. JOHN TAIT

(1809-1860) ( Presbyterian - Free )

Born on 2 November 1809 at Moffatt, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, the son of William (or John) Tait, cloth merchant, and his wife Catherine, nee Beattie. Educated at Glasgow University. At Greenock, Renfrewshire. He married on 2 May 1837 at Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland to Elizabeth Blair, daughter of William Blair and his wife Lillie, nee Grieg. They arrived at Hobart, Van Diemen's Land in September 1837 per "North Briton." Proceeded to New South Wales. At Woollongong (Illawarra), N.S.W. (1837-41). Moderator of the Synod of Australia in connexion with the Established Church of Scotland in 1841. At Parramatta, N.S.W. (1841-51). Visited Melbourne, Port Phillip District arriving on 9 November 1850 per "Shamrock" from Sydney and returned to Sydney in December 1850 per "Shamrock." Arrived back at Melbourne on 21 February 1851 per "Hirondelle" with his wife and family. Appointed to Geelong in April 1851. At the Free Presbyterian Church there till 1860. Died on 19 March 1860 at the Presbyterian Manse, Skene Street, Geelong, Victoria, and was buried on 21 March 1860 at the Western Cemetery, Geelong, Vic.
