Rev. EDWARD SWEETMAN

(1793-1856) ( Wesleyan Methodist )

Born on 12 April 1793 in Aynhoe, Northamptonshire, England. Sailed for Australia per "Sir Thomas Munro" in 1834 but was shipwrecked at the Cape de Verde Islands, Atlantic Ocean, and returned to England in February 1835. Served at Calais, France; Boulogne, France; and Gibraltar. He married c1836 at St. George's, Hanover Square, London, England to Sarah Merson whom he had met while in France. Arrived at Sydney, New South Wales with his wife on 24 February 1840 per "Union" from London, England. At Sydney, N.S.W. Arrived at Melbourne on 25 August 1845 per "Martha and Elizabeth" from Sydney. Succeeded Rev. William Schofield at the Wesleyan Chapel, corner of Collins and Queen Streets, Melbourne. Helped establish chapels at Little Brighton (1846); Geelong (1846); and Fitzroy (1849). Went Van Diemen's Land in March 1850 per "Shamrock" with his wife and family to succeed the Rev. William Butters at Launceston, V.D.L. Was back at Brighton, Victoria, c1853. Retired c1854 for health reasons and returned to England. Retired from the ministry at the 1855 British Conference. Died on 4 November 1856 at Sampford Peverell, Devon, England and was buried in the Parish Churchyard at Sampford Peverell, Devon.
