CHARLES STONE

(1819-1898) ( Wesleyan Methodist )

Born on 4 August 1819 at London, England, the son of Robert Stone, builder, and his wife Elizabeth, nee Burrell. Arrived in Van Diemen's Land c1834. Thought to have arrived at Melbourne in November 1838 from Hobart, V.D.L., with instructions from Rev. Joseph Orton to assist at Buntingdale Mission Station. Was a carpenter and lay preacher. He married on 23 December 1839 at St. James Church, Melbourne to Emma Hurlstone, daughter of Capt. Peter Hurlstone of the "Firefly," and of Brighton, near Melbourne. Established a chapel-schoolhouse at Williamstown where he held Wesleyan services and taught school. Moved to Brighton in 1845 and conducted a day school in the Hawthorn Road Wesleyan Church. Insolvent in 1845. Bought nine acres of land at Brighton in 1847. Was running a store in 1859. Brighton Councillor (1861-64). Died on 13 August 1898 at Mill Street, Brighton, Victoria, and was buried on 15 August 1898 at the Brighton Cemetery, Vic.
