Bishop AUGUSTUS SHORT

(1802-1883) ( Church of England )

Born on 11 June 1802 at Bickham House, near Exeter, Devon, England, the son of Charles Short, barrister, and his wife Grace, nee Millett. Educated at Christ College, Oxford (B.A.,1824; M.A.,1826; D.D.,1847). Ordained deacon in 1826 and priest in 1827 by the bishop of Oxford. Curate of Culham, near Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Public Examiner in the University of Oxford (1833-34). Vicar of Ravensthorpe, Northamptonshire (1835-47). He married on 10 December 1835 at Culham House, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England to Millicent Clara Phillips, of Hints Hall, Staffordshire, daughter of John Phillips of Culham House, Oxfordshire. Bampton lecturer at Oxford (1846). Consecrated bishop of Adelaide in Westminster Abbey, London on 29 June 1847. Arrived at Adelaide, South Australia, later that year per "Derwent." Arrived at Melbourne on 15 September 1850 per "Lucy" from Adelaide with his wife and family. Was present at the laying of the foundation stone of St. Paul's, Melbourne, on 21 September 1850. Resigned in 1882 and returned to England. Died on 5 October 1883 at Sultan House, Hyde Gardens, Eastbourne, Sussex, England.
