Rev. JOHN JOSEPH MOURITZ

(c1794-1868) ( Baptist )

Baptised on 6 January 1795 at Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland, the son of Joseph Mouritz, agent, and his wife Elizabeth, nee Shaw. He married firstly, c1825, at Dublin, Ireland, to Mary Ennis. Believed to have been in the army stationed in India. He married secondly, c1838, at Down, Ireland, to Elizabeth Ruddock. A Scotch Baptist. Arrived at Sydney, New South Wales on 31 January 1841 with his wife and three children per "Conrad" from London and Plymouth, Devon, England ( 6 October 1840 ). Possibly the pastor of the Rehoboth Chapel, Pitt Street, Sydney prior to his arrival at Melbourne about July 1841. He conducted services and a school in temporary premises in the city before moving to a dairy farm in Fitzroy and constructing the Rehoboth Chapel, Princes Street, Fitzroy. He compiled and published the "The Port Phillip Almanac and Directory for 1847" which was printed at the "Herald" office in Melbourne. Died on 4 June 1868 at Princes Street, Fitzroy, Victoria, and was buried on 6 June 1868 at the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton, Vic.
