Rev. WILLIAM MOSS

(1828-1891) ( Congregational )

Born on 23 July 1828 at Farnham, Surrey, England, the second son of George Moss, gentleman, and his wife Sarah Leah, nee Turner. Appointed as a preacher of the Gospel at Farnham on 4 February 1848. Arrived at Melbourne on 2 August 1850 per "Countess of Yarborough" from London, England and became associated with the Rev. Alexander Morison. Ordained on 5 October 1852 and was Pastor of the Prahran Independent Church for the following 26 years. He married firstly on 13 January 1853 at the Independent Chapel, Lonsdale Street, Melbourne to Elizabeth McClure, second daughter of Andrew McClure, of Lonsdale Street West, Melbourne and formerly of County Donegal, Ireland, and his wife Margaret, nee Gregg. His second marriage was on 13 May 1880 at 'Clarendon,' Cromwell Road, South Yarra to Mary Eleanor Herdsman, teacher, third daughter of Samuel Richard Herdsman, cashier with the Metropolitan Gas Company, and his wife Eleanor Calder, nee Whittle. Became Superintendent of the Victorian Asylum and School for the Blind (1878-91). Also spent 30 years as Honorary Secretary of the Victorian Deaf and Dumb Institution. Died on 14 March 1891 at his residence, 'Farnham,' Sorrett Avenue, Malvern, Victoria, and was buried on 16 March 1891 at the St. Kilda Cemetery, Vic.
