Rev. JOSEPH ANKERS MARSDEN

(1811-1889) ( Wesleyan Methodist )

Born in August 1811 at Leeds, Yorkshire, England, the son of John Marsden, draper, and his wife Sarah, nee Hughes. Thought to have been ordained into the Wesleyan ministry in 1836 and admitted into full connexion as a preacher in foreign missions in 1838. He retired because of ill-health. He married on 30 September 1836 at St. Peter's, Leeds, Yorkshire, England to Anne Hudson. Arrived at Melbourne on 13 March 1841 per "Adelaide" from Hobart, Van Diemen's Land. Held Melbourne's first church bazaar at the Wesleyan Church on the 24 June 1841. Preached at Portland on 2 October 1843 and laid the foundation stone of the first Wesleyan Chapel there on 11 October 1843. Assisted at the opening of the Wesleyan Chapel, Brighton, at the end of 1845. Had a residence in Collins Street, Melbourne in 1847. Died on 10 August 1889 at his residence, 106 Moor Street, Fitzroy, Vic., and was buried on 12 August 1889 at the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton, Vic.
