Born on 10 April 1799 at Dublin, Ireland, the youngest son of Sir John Macartney, Baronet and Member of the Irish House of Commons, and his wife Catherine, nee Hussey Burgh. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin (B.A.,1821; M.A.,B.D. & D.D.,1847). Ordained into the Church of Ireland as deacon on 21 September 1822 and priest on 14 September 1823. He married on 7 March 1833 at Dublin, Ireland, to Jane Hardman, daughter of Edward Hardman and his wife Rebecca, nee McLintock. Held various posts in Ireland prior to his arrival at Melbourne with Bishop Perry per "Stag" from London, England on 24 January 1848. Posted firstly to Heidelberg. Appointed archdeacon of Geelong in 1848. Incumbent of St. James' Cathedral, Melbourne (1852-60). Dean of Melbourne from 1852. Died on 8 October 1894 at the Deanery, 188 Hotham Street, East Melbourne, Victoria, and was buried on 10 October 1894 at the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton, Vic.
