Rev. ANDREW LOVE

(1798-1867) ( Presbyterian )

Born on 22 August 1798 at Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of William Love, miller. He married on 12 March 1822 at Symington, near Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland to Catherine Law, daughter of Thomas Law, and his wife Frances, nee Black. Had early connections with the Mechanic's Institute at Kirkentillock, near Glasgow. Was ordained by the Presbytery of Hamilton on 9 September 1839 shortly before departing from Greenock, Renfrewshire for Port Phillip on the "India" with his wife and family. Arrived at Port Phillip on 9 April 1840. First preached at Geelong on 12 April 1840 and became the first minister of the Established Church of Scotland to be resident there. Opened the first Presbyterian Church there on 3 July 1842. Continued his ministry in Geelong until his death on 23 April 1867 at St. Andrew's Manse, McKillop Street, Geelong, Victoria. He was buried on 25 April 1867 at the Eastern Cemetery, Geelong, Vic.
