Rev. WILLIAM HIGGINS

(1806-1876) ( Congregational )

Born 1806 at London, England, the son of William Higgins, gentleman, and his wife Martha Amelia. Ministered at Bethnal Green and Trinity Chapel, London. He married on 6 June 1824 at St. Luke's, Old Street, Finsbury, London, England to Frances Hart, daughter of Charles Hart of Essex, England. Ordained in 1826. Was connected with the Board of Congregational ministers in London. Ministered in Suffolk and Essex. At Trinity Chapel, Bethnal Green, Middlesex from c1845. Came to Port Phillip, arriving at Melbourne on 28 June 1849 per "Larpent" from London, England in response to the Rev. Dr. John Dunmore Lang's call. Began work here as an itinierant minister. At Leigh and Skipton. Appointed to Geelong where he ministered at the Congregational church for many years. Died on 24 October 1876 at his residence, Villamanta Street, Ashby, Geelong, Victoria, and was buried on 25 October 1876 at the Western Cemetery, Herne Hill, Geelong, Vic.
