Born about 9 December 1811 at Lazonby, Cumberland, England, the son of Thomas Hall, yeoman farmer, and his wife Mary, nee Hesket. Educated at St. Bee's Grammar School and Clare College, Cambridge University (B.A.,1835; M.A.,1838). Ordained deacon on 27 November 1836 by the Bishop of Ely, and priest in 1840 by the Bishop of Chester. Curate of St. Mary's, Manchester (1840-43) and St. George's, Stalybridge (1843-46). At Cambridge. He married on 11 April 1848 at North Ferriby, Yorkshire, England, to Elizabeth Clare Lambert, daughter of John Beevor Lambert, merchant, and his wife Mary Ann, nee Wallis. After their arrival at Melbourne on 7 November 1848 per "Royal George" from London, England, he assisted with services at St. James', Melbourne. Was posted to Ballan the following year. In 1853 he moved to Brenanah and in 1858 to 'Glenalbyn Grange,' near Kingower. At Glenalbyn he built a chapel and schoolhouse of timber. He was involved in the founding of a number of surrounding parishes. Died on 15 May 1887 at 'Glenalbyn Grange,' Kingower, Vic., and was buried on 17 May 1887 at the Kingower Cemetery, Vic. In 1953 his descendants built a memorial cairn to him at 'Glenalbyn Grange.'
