Born on 25 December 1821 at Newcastle, County Limerick, Ireland, the son of Francis Hales, quartermaster of the 40th Regiment, and his wife Catherine, nee Barnewall. Arrived in New South Wales with his parents on 19 November 1826 per "Minerva." At Hobart, Van Diemen's Land from 1827 to 1829 and thence to Bombay, India before returning to Ireland c1832. Lived on the Isle of Man. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin (B.A.,1846). Ordained deacon in 1846 in Tuam, Ireland, and priest in February 1847. Ministered at Castlebar, Ireland. He married on 2 September 1847 at Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland, Ann Augusta Stoney, daughter of the Rev. William B. Stoney, rector of Castlebar. They accompanied Bishop Perry to Melbourne, arriving on 24 January 1848 per "Stag" from London, England. On arrival he was stationed at Richmond, Gippsland and later at Heidelberg where he raised the money to build St. John's Church. Went to Launceston at the end of 1853. At Holy Trinity, Launceston as locum till 1856 and then appointed there permanently following the resignation of the former minister. Canon of St. David's Cathedral, Hobart (1872) and archdeacon of Northern Tasmania (1877). Warden of the University of Tasmania from 1896 to 1900. Died on 9 July 1900 at Lyttleton Street, Launceston, Tasmania. Buried on 11 July 1900 in the Church of England Burial Ground, Launceston, Tasmania. Memorial windows to him and his wife were placed in Holy Trinity Church, Launceston.
