Rev. JOHN PHILIP GELL

Born on 10 March 1816 at Matlock, Derbyshire, England, and baptised on 23 April 1816 at Matlock, Derbyshire, the son of the Rev. Philip Gell and his wife Elizabeth, nee Dod. Educated at Rugby School and Trinity College, Cambridge University (B.A., 1839; M.A. (by Royal mandate), c1840). Arrived at Hobart, Van Diemen's Land on 28 March 1840 per the convict ship "Runnymede". Went to Adelaide, South Australia per "Abeona" in December 1840. Ordained deacon in 1843 and priest in 1844 in Van Diemen's Land. Chaplain to Bishop Nixon (1844-48). Warden of Christ's College, Hobart (1846-48). Visited Port Phillip in 1844, arriving at Melbourne on 4 January 1844 per "Christina" from Launceston, V.D.L. Curate of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London (1849). He married on 7 June 1849 at St. George's, Bloomsbury, London, England, to Eleanor Isabella Franklin, daughter of Sir John Franklin, R.N. and his wife Eleanor Anne, nee Porden. Curate of St. Mary's, Bryanston Square (1850-54). Vicar of St. John's, Notting Hill (1854-78). Rector of Buxted, near Uckfield, Sussex (1878-98). Died on 12 March 1898 at his son's residence, 36 Hyde Park Square, London, England.
