Born on 17 April 1809 at Glasgow, Scotland, the son of the Rev. William (or Gavin) Gardner and his wife Mary, nee Clelland. Educated at the University of Glasgow. Ordained on 26 August 1840. Appointed to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Conway Street, Birkenhead, Lancashire, England. He married on 12 February 1844 at Birkenhead, Lancashire, to Catherine Forrest, daughter of John Alexander Forrest, merchant, of Liverpool, Lancashire. Arrived at Melbourne on 23 January 1850 per "Condor" en route from Liverpool to Adelaide. Founded the Chalmers Church, Adelaide. Minister of the Free Church in Adelaide in 1868. Then went to St. Andrew's, Launceston till 1874. Later at Queenscliff, Victoria till 1888. Died on 10 May 1899 at 'Mayfield', Toorak Road, Toorak, Victoria, and was buried on 11 May 1899 at the Boroondara Cemetery, Kew, Vic.
