Rev. JOHN CHEYNE

(1811-1880) ( Church of England )

Born 19 November 1811 in County Antrim, Ireland, the son of Dr. John Cheyne and his wife Sarah, nee Macartney, a relative of the Rev. Hussey Burgh Macartney. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin (B.A., 1833). He married on 10 May 1833 at Sherrington, Buckinghamshire, England to Ann(ie) Levina Forrest, daughter of Charles Ramus Forrest and his wife Ellen, nee St. Ledger. They arrived at Albany, King Georges Sound, Western Australia on 19 June 1834 per "James Pattison". Farmer at Oyster Bay. To Glory Harbour, New Zealand c1838. With a group of settlers who purchased an island from the Maoris and tried to farm the land but the venture was unsuccessful. Arrived at Sydney, New South Wales on 10 March 1839 per the whaler "Magnet." Schoolmaster at St. James College, Sydney, in 1848. Arrived at Geelong on 7 April 1849 per "Brothers" from Sydney. Ordained deacon on 23 December 1849 and priest on 15 June 1851 at St. James Church, Melbourne. At Burnbank 1851-52. At Castlemaine from 1853. First President of the Castlemaine District Hospital. At Muckleford. Stationed at Sandridge in 1859. Became insolvent and left the ministry c1861. His wife died in 1867 at Muckleford, Vic. He married secondly on 9 November 1870 at All Saint's Church, St. Kilda, Vic., to Janet Mary Beauois Carmichael, youngest daughter of James Carmichael, builder, of Hobart, Tasmania. Ran a school on Phillip Island in the 1870's. Died on 11 December 1880 at his residence, South Preston, Victoria and was buried on 14 December 1880 at the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton, Vic.
