Born c1810 in Alnwick, Northumberland, England, the son of Thomas Chapman, merchant and leather cutter, and his wife Margaret, nee Revely. Licentiate of the United Presbytery of Perth, Scotland in 1843. He married on the 20 November 1845 at the Whittingham Parish Church, Northumberland to Sarah Taylor, daughter of William Wilson, shopkeeper, and his wife Jane nee Hastie. Arrived at Melbourne on 25 January 1851 per "Maitland" from Plymouth, Devon, England, with his wife and child as a licensed preacher of the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland. Ordained on 14 May 1851 in Melbourne. Stationed firstly at Broadmeadows. Retired to the city in February 1871. At Drummond Street, Carlton. Died on 3 November 1892 at 'Reevely,' Hanover Street, Windsor, Vic., and was buried on 5 November 1892 at the Boroondara Cemetery, Kew, Vic.
