Bishop WILLIAM GRANT BROUGHTON

(1788-1853) ( Church of England )

Born on 22 May 1788 at Westminster, London, England, the son of Grant Broughton of London. Educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge University (B.A., 1818; M.A., 1823; D.D., 1836). Ordained in 1818. He married on 13 (or 30) July 1818 at the Cathedral, Canterbury, Kent, England to Sarah Francis, daughter of John Francis, rector of St. Mildred's, Canterbury. Curate of Hartley Wespall, Hampshire (1818-27). Curate of Farnham, Surrey (1827). Chaplain of the Tower of London (1828). Archdeacon of New South Wales, 1828. Consecrated the first and only Bishop of Australia at Lambeth in 1836. Installed at St. James' Church, Sydney, on 6 June 1836. Visited Melbourne, arriving on 14 April 1838 per "H.M.F. Conway" from Sydney. Visited Melbourne again towards the end of 1843. Bishop of Sydney and Metropolitan of Australasia (1847-53). Died on 20 February 1853 at the residence of Lady Gipps, 11 Chester Street, Belgrave Square, London, England, and was interred at Canterbury Cathedral, England.
