Rev. SAMUEL WATERHOUSE

(1830-1918) ( Wesleyan Methodist )

Born on 2 February 1830 possibly at Halifax, Yorkshire, England, the youngest son of the Rev. John Waterhouse, Wesleyan minister, and his wife Jane Beadnell, nee Skipsey. Educated at St. Andrew's School, Hobart, Van Diemen's Land. Entered the ministry in 1850. Appointed to itinerate in the Melbourne area, he arrived at Melbourne on 23 October 1850 per "Victoria Packet" from Hobart, V.D.L. He married on 27 January 1852 at the Wesleyan Centenary Chapel, Melville Street, Hobart, Van Diemen's Land to Esther Day Wilson, youngest daughter of George Wilson of Liverpool Street, Hobart. Missionary to Fiji till c1857. His wife died in 1856 at Fiji. He married secondly on 9 February 1858 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Melville Street, Hobart, Tasmania, to Eleanor Watson, fifth daughter of John Watson of Hobart and his wife Mary. Returned to Victoria. At Warrnambool; Kyneton; and then Amherst. Retired as a supernumary in 1865. Went to Hobart, Tasmania. His second wife died in 1906. Died on 19 November 1918 at the Mental Hospital, New Norfolk, Tasmania and was buried on 21 November 1918 at the Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Tasmania.
