Rev. GILBERT TURNBULL

(1810-1839) ( Congregational )

Born on 12 February 1810 on the Isle of Wight, England. Was taken to India as an infant and grew up there. Returned to England about 1834 to train as a Missionary at Homerton College, London. Ordained on 4 August 1836 at the Old Gravel-Pit Meeting House in Hackney, London. Sailed for India with his wife at the beginning of September 1836. Was a London Missionary Society Missionary at Bangalore, South India from late 1836 until 1838. Left because of ill-health and came to Australia with his wife. They arrived at Melbourne on 23 November 1838 per "Caledonia" from Madras, India, en route to Sydney. Arrived at Sydney, New South Wales on 17 December 1838 per "Caledonia." Died on 19 March 1839 at the residence of William Wright, Surrey Hills, Sydney, N.S.W., and was buried on 21 March 1839 at the Sydney Burial Ground, N.S.W. His widow returned to India later that year where she took charge of a boarding school.
