Rev. FRANCIS TUCKFIELD

(1808-1865) ( Wesleyan Methodist )

Born on 10 May 1808 at Germoe, Cornwall, England, the son of Samuel Tuckfield, captain of a mine, and his wife Mary, nee Hoskins. Worked as a miner and seasonal fisherman. Educated at the Theological Institution, Hoxton, London, England from 1835 to 1837. Entered the ministry in 1837. He married in 1837 at Penzance, Cornwall, to Sarah Gilbart of Cornwall, England. Arrived at Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, in March 1838 per "Seppings". Arrived at Melbourne on 23 July 1838 per "Adelaide" from Hobart, V.D.L. Helped to establish the Buntingdale Mission to the aborigines on the Barwon River. This mission was abandoned c1850. At Geelong. Also ministered in New South Wales and Tasmania. His wife died in 1855. He married secondly, on 5 January 1857, at Rosett Cottage, O'Brien's Bridge, Glenorchy to Mary Stevens, daughter of Mrs. Stevens of Rosett Cottage, Glenorchy, Tasmania. Appointed to Portland, Vic., in 1864. Died on 21 October 1865 at his residence, Percy Street, Portland, Victoria, and was buried on 25 October 1865 at the Portland Cemetery, Vic.
