Rev. JAMES ASCHE SULLIVAN

(1816-1888) ( Church of England )

Born on 13 May 1816 in Limerick (or Armagh), Ireland, the son of Major James Sullivan of Chesterfield House, Chesterfield, County Limerick, Ireland and his wife Mary Anne, nee As(c)he. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin (B.A.,1840). At Wells Theological College in 1844. Ordained deacon and priest in 1845 by the Archbishop of Armagh. Curate at Tartaraghan in the diocese of Armagh (1845). Came to Australia as a missionary with the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. Arrived at Melbourne on 2 May 1850 per "Troubadour" from London, England. Incumbent in the diocese of Melbourne (1850-54). At Kyneton, Victoria. Returned to England. Curate of Bishopsteignton, Devon, England (1855-56). He married on 23 July 1856 at Gorey, County Wexford, Ireland to Georgina Lucie Owen, daughter of George Annesley Owen and his wife Lucy Catherine, nee Moore. Returned as incumbent in the diocese of Melbourne (1857-62). At Barrabool Hills, Victoria. At Kew, Melbourne, Victoria. At Surry Hills, Sydney, New South Wales. Returned to England. Curate of Hollywood (1864-66). His wife died on 18 June 1865. Vicar of Ballymore Eustace, Dublin, Ireland (1866-72). Held the charge of St. James-the-less, Bristol (or Brisbane) (1874-75). Rector of Askeaton, diocese of Limerick from 1875. Still there in 1884. Died on 22 July 1888 at (3 Lemsford Road?) St. Alban's, Hertfordshire, England.
