Rev. ALFRED STACKHOUSE

(1811-1876) ( Church of England )

Born on 24 July 1811 at Camberwell Grove, London, England, the eldest son of John Stackhouse, gentleman, of Camberwell, Surrey, and his wife Frances Mary, nee Rashleigh. Educated at Lincoln College, Oxford University (B.A.,1834; M.A.,1837). Ordained deacon in June 1835 and priest in March 1838. Appointed as Chaplain in the Bombay Presidency, East India. Visited Van Diemen's Land about 1840 for health reasons, filling in for the Rev. Rowland Robert Davies at Longford and Perth, V.D.L. Arrived at Melbourne on 24 January 1842 per "Corsair" from Launceston, V.D.L., on his way back to India. Departed in February 1842 per "Samuel Boddington" for Bombay. Received an appointment to Perth, V.D.L., and arrived back in Melbourne on 21 December 1842 per "Harlequin." Left for Launceston later that month per "Scout" and resumed duty at Perth in January 1843. He married on 17 May 1843 at the Longford Parish Church, V.D.L., to Ellen Archer, daughter of Thomas Archer and his wife Susan, nee Hortle. Author of "Eight Lectures on the Signs of the Times; with an appendix" (1849). Rector of Christ Church, Longford from 1860 to March 1876. Visited Sydney, New South Wales in October 1875. Died on 25 May 1876 at his residence at St. Leonard's, Launceston, Tasmania and was buried on 30 May 1876 at St. Leonard's, Launceston, Tasmania. Christ Church, Longford, Tasmania has his original bible in their foyer and memorials to him.
