Rev. ROBERT ROSS

(1792-1862) ( Congregational )

Born on 15 August 1792 at Leith, Scotland, the son of Robert Ross, candle manufacturer, and his wife Johan, nee Scott. Educated at Edinburgh (M.D.). He married on 24 (or 26) January 1818 at St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland to Marina Haldon, daughter of John Haldon. Ordained in March 1818 into the Church of Scotland. At Orenburg (1818-21) and Astrakhan (1821-25), in Russian Tartary with the Edinburgh (later Scottish) Missionary Society. Returned to Edinburgh, Scotland until 1827. Minister of the Baxter Congregational Church, Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England (1827-39). His wife died in 1829. He married secondly on 18 July 1832 at Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire, England to Sarah Grafton. Arrived at Sydney, New South Wales on 26 February 1840 with his wife and six children per "Earl Grey" from London, England. Commenced at the Pitt Street Congregational Church, Sydney on 29 February 1840. Arrived at Melbourne on 6 October 1846 per "Shamrock" from Sydney en route to Launceston. Arrived back at Melbourne on 17 November 1846 per "Shamrock" from Launceston en route to Sydney. Resigned in 1854. Died on 2 November 1862 at his residence, 'Edgecliff Cottage', Double Bay, Sydney, N.S.W., and was buried on 4 November 1862 at the Congregational Burial Ground, Sydney, N.S.W.
