ROBERT REEVES

(c1797-1877) ( Baptist )

Born c1797 in Cork, Ireland, the son of Thomas Reeves and his wife Catherine/Dorothea Oates. Thought to have been in the Customs Department in Mauritius prior to coming to Australia. In Sydney, New South Wales c1839. Arrived at Melbourne on 24 February 1839 per "Bessy" from Sydney though may have made an earlier visit. Thought to have performed a baptism at Melbourne in 1839. His wife and children arrived at Melbourne in February 1840. In business as an estate agent. Involved in the founding of the first Baptist Church in Melbourne. Became insolvent in 1842. Agent in Port Fairy for the "Portland Guardian" newspaper in June 1846. Died on 19 October 1877 in Geelong, Victoria and was buried on 21 October 1877 at the Geelong Eastern Cemetery, Vic.
