Rev. JOHN NISBET

(c1814-1899) ( Congregational )

Born c1814 at Barnet, Hertfordshire, England the son of a butcher. Entered the ministry in 1836 after training at Barnet/Highbury College, near London. Arrived in Van Diemen's Land c1836. He married firstly on 24 May 1842 at the Independent Chapel, Clapton, near London, England, to Sarah Elizabeth Hopkins, eldest daughter of Henry Hopkins of Hobart, V.D.L. and his wife Sarah. His wife died at Hobart in 1847. Visited Melbourne, arriving on 3 April 1850 per "Circassian" from Hobart. At Berea. He married secondly on 16 November 1858 at St. Kilda, Victoria by the Rev. Alexander Morison to Barchly Brown Cadden of St. Kilda, daughter of Alexander Cadden and his wife Euphemia, nee Brough. At New Town, Tasmania from c1859. Chairman of the Congregational Union from 1872. Died on 9 May 1899 at New Town, Tasmania, and was buried on the 12 May 1899 at New Town, Tasmania.
