Rev. WILLIAM MERRY

(c1819-1859) ( Church of England )

Born c1819 and baptised on 8 November 1819 at St. Martin's, Exeter, Devon, England, the second son of the Rev. John Merry of St. Sidwell's, Exeter, and his wife Elizabeth. Educated at Worcester College, Oxford University (B.A.,1842; M.A.1848). He married on 11 April 1848 at Olney, Buckinghamshire, England to Isabella Lucas Phipps. Arrived at Geelong with his wife on 2 October 1848 per "Berkshire" from London, England having acted as religious instructor on board. Ordained deacon at Melbourne on 25 January 1849. Appointed firstly to Melbourne, officiating at the Temperance Hall, Russell Street, Melbourne from about March 1849. Ordained priest at St. James Cathedral, Melbourne on 23 December 1849. At Geelong. Returned to England because of ill-health, departing on 31 December 1851 per "Himalaya" for London. Died on 17 May 1859 at 17 Cambridge Place, Clifton, Bristol, England.
