Rev. JOHN HAMILTON McLACHLAN

(c1813-1908) ( Presbyterian - Free )

Born about April 1813 at Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of Campbell McLachlan, manager of a cabinet factory, and his wife Agnes, nee Leich. He married on 15 October 1849 at Kirkmichael (and/or Maybole), Ayrshire, Scotland to Elizabeth Ray Duncan, daughter of John Duncan and his wife Mary, nee Meikle. He was sent to Australia as a missionary from the Free Church of Scotland by the Presbytery of Ayr. Arrived at Melbourne with his wife on 9 February 1850 per "Zeminder" from Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Was to be appointed to Gippsland, but instead replaced the Rev. John Zieglar Huie at Geelong for about a year. He was then appointed to minister to the settlers on the River Hopkins in the Western District near Wickliffe, Vic. Later went to the borders of the River Murray. At Amherst, Vic. Died on 18 February 1908 at Amherst, Victoria, and was buried on the 20 February 1908 at Amherst Cemetery, Vic.
