Deacon JOHN LUSH

(c1802-1858) ( Baptist )

Born c1802 in Somerset, England, and baptised on 28 October 1802 at Horsington, Somerset, England, the son of Israel Lush, woollen draper, and his wife Elizabeth Sarah (Isabella?), nee Saunders. He married firstly on 28 October 1824 in Somerset, England, Elizabeth Richards, daughter of John Richards and Hannah, nee Body. Arrived at Melbourne on 21 January 1841 per "Sir Charles Forbes" from London, England, with his wife (who died on 27 February 1841) and family. He was married secondly on 29 October 1841 at Melbourne by Independent minister, the Rev. William Waterfield, to Keren (Caroline) Happuch Hailes, daughter of William Hailes of Cambridgeshire, England, and his wife Mary, nee Button. Worked as a tailor and draper. Was active in the founding of the Collins Street Baptist Church. Conducted services before and after the Rev. Ham's ministry. Filled in for eighteen months to June 1849. Died on 25 November 1858 at his residence, Gardiner's Creek Road, near Melbourne, Vic., and was buried on 27 November 1858 at the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton, Vic. His tombstone contains the following verse:

"When from the dust of death I rise,
To claim my mansion in the skies,
E'en then shall this be all my plea,
Jesus has lived, has died for me.
"
