Rev. WILLIAM LIGHTBODY

(1818-1879) ( Wesleyan Methodist )

Born in 1818 in Armagh, Ireland, the son of John Lightbody, farmer, and his wife Mary, nee Hancock. Arrived in New South Wales in 1842. Entered the ministry c1843 and was posted to the Camden Circuit, N.S.W. Came to Port Phillip in 1850 and was appointed to the Western District. He married on 22 January 1852 at the Wesleyan Church, Geelong, Vic., to Rebecca Kittson, eldest daughter of James Kittson of Bridgewater, Vic., and his wife Catherine, nee Trotter. Became a supernumerary in 1856 and commenced farming in the Portland area. Still officiated occasionally. Died on 13 March 1879 whilst in his buggy near Portland, Victoria, and was buried on 15 March 1879 at the South Portland Cemetery, Vic.
