Archdeacon HENRY JEFFREYS

(1788-1849) ( Church of England )

Born on 3 July 1788 and baptised on 10 July 1788 at Laceton/Layston, Hertfordshire, England, the son of the Rev. Richard Jeffreys and his wife Sarah. Educated at St. John's College, Cambridge University (B.A.,1814; M.A.,1827). Ordained deacon on 7 January 1816 and priest on 1 June 1817. He married Mary Hobson. Chaplain in Bombay, India, from 1837. Became archdeacon of Bombay in 1838. Senior chaplain to the Right Rev. Dr. Carr, Bishop of Bombay, 1839. Was in Van Diemen's Land in 1839 and visited Port Phillip, arriving at Melbourne on 30 November 1839 per "Henry" from Launceston, V.D.L. Departed Melbourne on 30 December 1839 for Launceston. Returned to Bombay. Visited England in 1849 and contracted a cholera infection. Died on 10 September 1849 while on a visit at the residence of the Rev. W. Mills of St. John's, Exeter, Devon, England.
