Rev. JOHN HUME

(c1822-1855) ( Presbyterian - Free )

Born c1822 at Greenlaw, Borders, Scotland, the son of William Hume, farmer, and his wife Eleanor, nee Smith. He married on 12 January 1851 at St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland to Ann Noble Small, daughter of William Kern Small and his wife Mary, nee Nelson. They arrived at Melbourne on 26 May 1851 per "Montgomery" from Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He was ordained in John Knox's Church, Swanston Street, Melbourne, on 12 June 1851 and ministered there for the following three months. In October 1851 he was settled at Kilmore. For a short time he edited a small religious and temperance magazine called "The Pioneer." At Kilmore his health gradually deteriorated till he died on 3 September 1855 at the residence of his friend, William Hamilton, 'Glenaroua,' Kilmore, Victoria.
