Rev. SAMUEL HEWLETT

(1795-1874) ( Baptist )

Born 16 June 1795 at Sherbourne, Dorset, England the son of James Hewlett and his wife Ann. Of the Baptist Mission House, Hobart, Van Diemen's Land. He married on 22 March 1819 at St. Bride's, Fleet Street, London, England to Catherine Creech. At Dunmow, Essex 1831-34. At Reading, Berkshire. At Romney Street, Westminster. Arrived at Sydney, New South Wales on 31 January 1839 per "Andromache". At Paramatta, Liverpool and Wollongong. To Hobart, Van Diemen's Land c1846. His wife died at Hobart on 26 February 1847. He arrived at Melbourne on 1 April 1847 per "Skerne" from Launceston, V.D.L. to minister at the Baptist Church, Collins Street, Melbourne during Rev. Ham's absence. Returned to Launceston per "Shamrock" in June. Arrived back in Melbourne on 28 December 1847 per "Swan" and assisted with a Congregational ordination service on 18 January 1848. He married secondly on 15 February 1848 at Melbourne to Mrs. Mary Hamilton (widow), daughter of Allan McLean and his wife Hannah, nee McLean. Returned to Launceston per "Swan" in March. Appointed to the Baptist Church, Yarra Street, Geelong, in 1853. First Pastor of the Aberdeen Street Baptist Church. Resigned in July 1858. Died on 11 August 1874 at Austin Street, Chilwell, Geelong, Victoria and was buried on 14 August 1874 at the Western Cemetery, Herne Hill, Geelong, Vic.
