Rev. IRVING HETHERINGTON

(1809-1875) ( Presbyterian - Free )

Born on 23 July 1809 at Whaite, Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, the son of Richard Hetherton, farmer, and his wife Louisa, nee Carruthers. Educated at Edinburgh University. Licenced on 3 August 1835 by the Presbytery of Lochmaben. He married firstly, on 24 February 1837 at Workington Parish Church, Cumberland, England, to Jessie Dalton Carr. Ordained by the Presbytery of Lochmaben in the Dryfesdale Parish Church on 25 February 1837. Sailed from Dundee in March 1837 for Sydney per "John Barry" and arrived there on 13 July 1837. Appointed to Singleton. He married secondly on 26 April 1841 at Mt. Keira, Illawarra, N.S.W., to Margaret MacAlister Shannon, eldest daughter of Charles MacAlister Shannon, late of Leapinstrath and Wigli, Cantire, Argyleshire, Scotland, and his wife Elizabeth, nee Campbell. Arrived at Melbourne on 30 May 1847 per "Christina" from Sydney, New South Wales. Appointed to Scots Church, Melbourne, and ministered there from 1847 till his death on 5 July 1875 at Hotham Street, East Melbourne, Victoria. He was buried on 8 July 1875 at the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton, Vic.
