Rev. THOMAS HASTIE

(1813-1898) ( Presbyterian - Free )

Born on 14 January 1813 at Whitburn, Linlithgowshire, Scotland, the son of John Hastie, house building contractor, and his wife Helen, nee Brown. Educated at St. Andrew's University, Fife and at Edinburgh. Teacher at Marischal College, Aberdeen, Scotland. Missionary in connection with St. John's Church, Montrose, Angus, Scotland. Ordained in January 1842, by the Presbytery of Brechin. He married on 18 April 1842 at Montrose to Jane Smith, daughter of William Smith of Montrose, and his wife Jane, nee Crole. Arrived at Melbourne on 3 September 1842 per "Duke of Richmond" from Leith, Scotland, with his wife en route to assist the Rev. John Anderson at St. Andrew's, Launceston, V.D.L. Did ministerial work in V.D.L. for five years. Returned to Melbourne in January 1847 per "Swan" and was persuaded to accept an appointment by the Free Presbyterian Church to Buninyong. Resigned in 1891. Died on 20 April 1898 at the Old Manse, Learmonth Street, Buninyong, Victoria, and was buried on 22 April 1898 at the Buninyong Cemetery, Vic.
