Rev. JOHN HARCOURT

(1817-1893) ( Wesleyan Methodist )

Born on 22 March 1817 at Birmingham, England. Arrived in Van Diemen's Land in the 1840's. Gave up a commercial career in order to enter the ministry in 1845. May have been at Seymour in the Port Phillip District, c1845. In Adelaide, South Australia (1846-47) before arriving at Melbourne on 5 November 1848 per "Juno" from Adelaide. He married on 25 October 1849 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Parramatta, N.S.W., to Ann Sargeant Turner, daughter of the Rev. Nathaniel Turner and his wife Ann, nee Sargeant. Continued his Melbourne appointment till 1851. At Willunga, S.A. (1852-56), Adelaide (1857-59), Castlemaine (1860-62), Melbourne (1863-68), Launceston (1869-71), Sandhurst (1872-73), Williamstown (1874-76), Sale (1877-78) and Geelong (1879-81). Retired as a supernumary in 1882. Died on 6 December 1893 at his residence, 'Home Cottage', Belmont Avenue, Kew, Victoria, and was buried on 8 December 1893 at the Boroondara Cemetery, Kew, Vic.
