Rev. PETER GUNN

(1812-1864) ( Presbyterian )

Born in 1812 at Tacher, near Wick, Caithnesshire, Scotland, the son of John (or Aeneas) Gunn of Tacher Farm and his wife Katherine, nee Innes of Thrumster, Caithness. Educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen, and Edinburgh University. Ordained by the Presbytery of Caithness on 11 August 1841. Arrived at Melbourne on 25 February 1842 per "Welcome" from Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland as minister to the Gaelic settlers. Visited Albury, N.S.W. and other areas in the bush. Ministered at Melbourne (1842-43), Bulleen (1843-45), and Campbellfield (1845-64). He married on 29 July 1852 at Brighton, Vic., to Jane Scott, second daughter of William Scott of Londonderry, Ireland, and his wife Jane, nee Marshall (or Maxwell). Died on 2 June 1864 at the Manse, Campbellfield, Victoria, and was buried on 4 June 1864 at the Campbellfield Cemetery where a memorial was erected.
