Rev. JOHN COUCH GRYLLS

(1796-1854) ( Church of England )

Born c1793 at Plymouth Dock, Devon, England, and baptised at the Morice Street Wesleyan Chapel, Plymouth Dock, Devon the son of William Grylls, lamplighter, clerk and stone engraver, and his second wife Phillipy, nee Hayne. He married c1820 at Stoke Damerel, Devon to Sarah Richards. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and Jesus College, Cambridge University. Ordained deacon on 21 December 1823. Arrived at Melbourne on 12 October 1838 per "Denmark Hill" from Sydney, New South Wales. Minister of St. James', Melbourne till 1840 when he returned to England on a visit. Received an M.A. in 1840. Arrived back with his wife and family per "Himalaya" in 1842. Curate of St. Philip's, Sydney in 1843, Canon of St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney. Minister of Holy Trinity, Argyle Street, Sydney, till 1847. Died on 24 April 1854 at his residence, Victoria Terrace, Miller's Point, Sydney, N.S.W., and was buried on 27 April 1854 at Camperdown, N.S.W.
