Rev. JOHN HERBERT GREGORY

(1827-1897) ( Church of England )

Born on 11 or 15 January 1827 at London, England, the son of George Phillips Foster Gregory, solicitor and sometime Prothonotary of the Supreme Court, N.S.W. and his wife Catherine, nee Toller. Possibly arrived at Sydney, New South Wales, in August 1843 per "Florentia" from London. Employed as a solicitor's clerk. Later a tutor at Maneroo, N.S.W. Came to Melbourne c1849 at Bishop Perry's request. Ordained deacon on 26 May 1850 and priest on 15 June 1851 by Bishop Perry at St. James' Church, Melbourne. Toured the bush areas in the north of Victoria. Appointed to the Bendigo diggings in June 1852. Incumbent of All Saint's, St. Kilda (1855-93). He married on 30 June 1877 at Christ Church, South Yarra, Vic., to Mrs. Martha Rowe, widow of Henry Rowe, and daughter of Archdeacon Theodore Carlos Benoni Stretch. Retired because of ill-health in 1893 and returned to England. Died on 2 April 1897 at Hillside Ticehurst, near Hurst Green, Sussex, England.
