Rev. JOHN EGGLESTON

(1813-1879) ( Wesleyan Methodist )

Born on 2 January 1813 at Newark-on-Trent, Nottingham, England, the son of Frederick Eggleston, confectioner, and his wife Ann, nee Else. Entered the ministry in 1834. Served at Rotherham, Yorkshire; Buxton, Derbyshire; Sheffield, Yorkshire; and Edinburgh, Scotland. He married on 6 August 1838 at the Tipton Parish Church, Staffordshire, England to Eliza Moulton, daughter of William Moulton of Lincolnshire, England and his wife Henrietta Marion, nee Egan. Arrived at Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, in 1839. To Adelaide, South Australia, c1840; Launceston, V.D.L., in 1843, New Norfolk, V.D.L., in 1846, and Hobart, V.D.L., in 1847. Arrived at Melbourne on 7 February 1848 per "Shamrock" en route from Sydney to Launceston. In Sydney in 1850 and was later transferred to Melbourne. Back in Sydney in 1856. Returned to Melbourne in 1863. Visited England in 1867. Retired in 1878. Died on 23 January 1879 at the Wesleyan Parsonage, New Street, Brighton, Victoria, and was buried on 24 January 1879 at the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton, Vic.
