Rev. BENJAMIN CUZENS

(1801 - 1869) ( Congregational )

Born in 1801 and baptised on 9 October 1801 at St. Mary's, Portsea, Hampshire, England, the son of Benjamin Cuzens, office clerk, and his wife Elizabeth, nee Osmar. Worked originally as an artist. He married firstly, c1824, at Spitalfield, London, England, to Elizabeth Gent. He married secondly on 10 March 1828 at St. Dunstan's, Stepney, London, England to Phoebe Clarke. After entering the Congregational ministry he was stationed at Crick, Northamptonshire 1838-41 and Broadway, Worcestershire 1841-49. He sailed from London with his wife and family per "Travencore" and arrived at Point Henry, Geelong, on 1 November 1849. They were in a party of settlers who came to Australia in response to a call by the Rev. Dr. John Dunmore Lang. He was given charge of a new church at Geelong and ministered there for many years till his death on 18 September 1869 at his residence, Ryrie Street, Geelong, Victoria. He was buried on 20 September 1869 at the Western Cemetery, Newtown, Geelong, Vic.
