Rev. WILLIAM COX CURREY

(1816-1882) ( Wesleyan Methodist )

Born in 1816 at Temple Cloud, Somerset, England, and baptised on 11 August 1816 at Midsomer Norton Wesleyan, Somerset, the son of William Currey, draper and local preacher, and his wife Honor, nee Cox. Went to South Africa with his family c1828. Following the death of his mother he proceeded on to New South Wales in 1839. Became a probationary minister in Sydney prior to arriving in Melbourne on 29 September 1847 per "Peri" from Sydney. Stationed at Geelong. Entered the ministry formally in 1848. Spent a couple of years in Adelaide, South Australia. Returned to Melbourne c1850. Stationed at Portland (1851); Mt. Alexander (1852); Forest Creek (1853); Williamstown (1854-56); Pentridge (1857); Port Fairy (1858-59); Moorabbin (1860-61); Smythesdale (1862-64); and Avoca (1865). Retired from the ministry in 1866 and became a schoolteacher. He married on 8 November 1862 at the Wesley Church, Lydiard Street, Ballarat, Victoria, to Mrs. Ann Evitt, widow, daughter of John Purnell, farmer, and his wife Mary, nee Haigh. They settled in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton. Died on 11 May 1882 at the District Hospital, Ballarat, Victoria, and was buried on 13 May 1882 at the Ballarat Cemetery, Vic.
