Rev. JOHN COLLINS

Born c1821 at Romsey, Hampshire, England, the son of John Collins, labourer, and his wife Sarah. Cabinetmaker. He married on 1 June 1846 at the Independent Abbey Chapel, Romsey, Hampshire, England, to Maria Bartlett, daughter of James Bartlett, labourer. A Baptist lay preacher, he arrived at Melbourne in 1849. Ministered at the Collins Street Baptist Church following the Rev. John Ham. Pastor of the Brighton Church (c1857-61). Deacon at the Albert Street Baptist Church, Melbourne. Wood and coal merchant. Died on 13 August 1904 at the residence of his daughter (Mrs. C Baker), 18 Hopetoun Street, Elsternwick (Caulfield), Victoria, and was buried on 15 August 1904 at the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton, Vic.
